<Abstract>
It was the purpose of this study to study the educational thought of Joseph Smith which made background of educational enthusiasm with one of the growth elements of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter day Saints.
Topics were considered in logical sequence, proceeding from educational practices under the leadership of Joseph Smith, through metaphysical considerations, such as "The nature of God and Man,". to epistemological and related topics.
The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price, with teachings, writings, and recorded discourses of the prophet Joseph Smith were studied to the educational thought contained in them.
In the first half of the nineteenth centry, religion movement was diversely progressed in America. Especially, there was a deep relation ship between colonezation and religious movement. It was in these conditions that Joseph Smith declared that God had spoken to man again. In 1820, Joseph received revelation from God and was chosen as a prophet in 1830.
From this time forth, he started to receive revelation on the course mankind should pursue in this life. Joseph Smith recognized the weaknesses and restrictions of the people and teached special educational thoughts to the people. Not only did he establish general educational systems for children and adults but also established the School of the Prophets for spiritual education. In this course, he presented special educational thoughts. He taught that God and man were of the same race. Also, he taught that man could obtain truth and light through free agency and the Holy Spirit, and through the mercy of Christ reach the same level of God, like the savior.
It was a Key principle in the society of Zion envisioned by Joseph that he teach correct principles, and through these principles, and revelations, enable man to govern themselves individually, become free, and live in unity without coercion.
These special educational thoughts contributed to leading his people righteously and enlightening their knowledge with the establishment of educational systems.
This education system was evaluated as a special and advanced method at that time. The general education from this system caused the saints to become a profitable people in society. And in the spiritual aspects, this helped in preparing missionary work and providing leadership of organization. Learning also advanced in quality through the Holy Spirit and general knowledge.
The educational thoughts of Joseph Smith which have been researched in this study will play an important role to determine the proper directions of education in this confused environment.
