Gordon Hinckley, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, will visit Korea May 21-23 to promote the church's missions thro ugh meetings with clergy and laity here.

The world leader of the Mormon Church, who will arrive at Pusan on Tues day will meet with the church missionaries working in Pusan and Taejon a nd laity from the area at the Pusan KBS Hall on his first day in Korea.
Prior to holding a Seoul rally of Mormons at the Weightlifting Gymnasiu m in the Olympic Park, Hinckley may call on President Kim Young-sam.
A church spokesman said the top Mormon leader will talk about the churc h's charity missions for North Korean people.

As part of its humanitarian service in North Korea and Southeast Asia, the church responded to the appeal for the flood-stricken North Koreans by sending $250,000 worth of medical supplies, foodstuffs, winter clothi ng and cash.
The six containers of aid items were received Dec. 18, 1995 and immedia tely distributed.

The Church of Latter-Day Saints, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, stresses family values. It claims a worldwide total membership of 9.4 m illion in 156 countries and territories. Its missionaries number 49,000. The Korean church membership is 67,000 with 400 missionaries in 162 war ds and branches. It has one headquarters temple and spends annually abou t $11 million for proselytizing.
Hinckley visited Korea five times since 1960 and this is his first visi t here after he became the 15th president of the church founded by Josep h Smith in New York State in 1830.

말일성도 예수 그리스도 교회  고든 비 힝클리대관장은 한국역원들과 회원들과의 모임을 통해 교회의 사업을 활성화할 목적으로 5월 21-23일 한국을 방문할 예정이다.

 

화요일 부산에 도착할 예정인 몰몬교회를 이끄는 세계적인 지도자 힝클리 대관장은 부산과 대전지역에서 봉사하고 있는 교회 선교사들을 만날 예정이며 부산 KBS홀에서 회원들과 한국에서의 첫날 밤을 보낼 예정이다.  올림픽공원 역도경기장에서 서울 집회를 가지기에 앞서서 대관장은 김영삼 대통령을 만날 예정이다. 

 

교회 대변인은 대관장이 북한 지역에 교회가 앞장서서 자선사업을 펼쳐야 한다고 역설했다.  북한과 동남아시아 빈곤지역에서 펼치는 자선사업의 일환으로 홍수로 타격을 입은 북한 주민에게 25만불 상당의 의료용품과 식료품, 겨울의류와 현금을 보내어 온정의 손길을 전달했다.  여섯 개의 컨테이너에 실린 구호 물품은 1995년 12월 18일 도착하여 즉시 배부되었다. 

 

유타주 솔트레이크 시에 본부를 두고 있는 말일성도 교회는 가정을 제일 중시하고 있다.  전세계적으로 156개국과 지역에서 940만 회원이 있다.   49000명의 선교사가 전세계적으로 활동하고 있다. 한국교회의 회원수는 162와드와 지부에서 400명의 선교사를 포함하여 67000명이나 된다. 서울성전이 있으며 개종자를 위한 비용으로 매년 1100만 달러를 소요한다.  대관장은 1960년 이래로 다섯 번 째 한국을 방문했으며 1830년 뉴욕주에서 요셉 스미스 예언자가 교회를 세운이래 15대 대관장이 되고나서는 한국을 처음 방문했다.
